The Blessed Foals There is nothing quite so precious as being in the presence of a baby horse; the miniature version of the large majestic equines we have come to love so deeply. I will never forget my first experience, it seemed as if my whole world stopped as my heart filled with an indescribable joy. It is one of my deepest wishes to bring energy healing to these small precious beings that are born into a world that can often be overwhelming for them.
From the moment of conception, the baby horse knows only the energy of its mother. She is his world.
He feels her physical energy; the functions of her body nurturing his.
He feels her emotional energy; her unconditional love for him as he grows inside of her and the feelings she has about their life together.
He feels her mental energy; her thoughts of what she must do to carry him to term, give birth and then protect him thereafter.
He feels her spiritual energy… the heartfelt connection of oneness with her horse spirit and she with his.
The baby horse is then brought out of the comforts of the womb and is born into an exciting world full of noise, activity and other beings. All is new, stimulating and sometimes can even be overwhelming for the little one. However, when he gets scared he knows he can cling to the one source of truth that he has known for the last 11 months; his one point of safety, nurturing and reason, his mother. And so he naturally clings ...

… until the day comes (and usually this time comes much too soon in a domesticated horse’s life) that he and his mother must be separated.
This is the plight of many young foals and mare moms in this day and age. Due to a variety of reasons weaning is usually abrupt and/or hurried. To the human eye, we still see a beautiful mare and a precious babe, but what we don’t see is what lies below the surface of these beings on an emotional and mental level. The emotional and mental stress of early weaning can wreak havoc on a horse’s energetic system causing blocks on an emotional and mental level that can possibly lead to other behavioral problems. If these blocks are left unattended and the animal isn’t given a chance to process and be supported in their grief, overtime this emotional/mental upset can possibly manifest as an illness or disease on their physical body.
Let’s take humans for instance… when we become stressed, stress may start as an emotional/mental disruption. We may feel sad, worried, and fearful or be obsessed mentally with what is happening to our world. If we do not address our feelings or situation then we may soon start to feel stress in our physical body in the form of pain, e.g., chest pain. If the chest pain is not addressed, and we do not find a way to cope with life stresses, then we may overtime even suffer from an illness or disease such as heart disease. The same happens with animals, except since they are so sensitive this process isn’t so subtle and can happen even quicker.
Many of the adult horses that I have worked with still carry grief (in the form of an energy block in their system) from being separated too early from their primary caregiver, their mom. Once given a chance through energy healing to release this deep-seated trauma, and have someone listen to their suppressed emotional woes, the horse often can experience a more overall balanced state.
Benefits for the Foal: When we separate dogs or cats from their initial caretakers, we usually bring them into the comforts of our own home where they are cuddled frequently, and held when they cry. The dog/cat baby feels a sense of ongoing nurturing which helps them to adjust to their new domesticated life with humans without the primary care of their mother.
Since horses are wild animals, spending a lot of their time away from humans, foals are usually not given this consistent level of nurturing. Energy healing nurtures the foal by providing a sense of love and comfort that is needed at this crucial time in their life and is no longer provided by their mother. It helps foals to process any shock, fear and/or grief that they may experience from early separation. By helping the baby horse to feel more balanced on a physical, emotional, mental and spiritual level, energy healing assists these precious little beings in adapting to new surroundings, new horse friends, and humans.
Benefits for the Horse Mother: Being separated from her baby is a traumatic event for a mare. She has carried her child for 11 months, loves him/her deeply and feels in her heart that her child’s safety is her main responsibility. Energy healing helps horse mothers to cope with any shock, worry and/or grief they may feel as a
result of early separation.Sadly, after the baby is gone the mare’s body continues to physically and energetically remind her of her loss, i.e. full udders, swollen belly, etc. Energy healing also helps mares to physically heal by speeding up their body’s natural rate of healing. As a result, her body is able to adjust more quickly to the physiological changes it has been through as a result of her pregnancy.
A slow natural weaning process (See Natural Weaning) is ideal for both mare and foal, followed if necessary by a final separation when the colt seems sufficiently independent, had made other horse friends and seems ready to explore the world without needing constant reassurance from his mother.
If natural weaning is not an option then energy healing can lovingly assist our beautiful horses in feeling more comfortable surrounding and after weaning practices. This beautiful gift of healing goes a long way toward encouraging horses to be happy and healthy on all levels throughout their entire life.
